The Newbies: Nia Coffey and Marie Gulich
We had a chance to get some face time with some of the new faces to the team today. Nia Coffey and Marie Gulich joined this Dream team that has Championship aspirations. Coffey was the #5 overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft. Entering her 3rd season in the WNBA Coffey has a unique skill set and is looking to come in contribute to this Dream team in whatever way she can.
Gulich was acquired in a draft day trade after the Dream selected Brianna Turner with the 11th pick, they traded for Gulich about 20 minutes later. She is a stretch five who can score at all three levels and should bring solid depth to this Dream front line. “She does a lot of the things we like to do, she runs and transitions, she can rebound and get in transition, she can pick and pop,” Collen said. “When we lost Dantas, we kind of lost that 4-5 versatility, with someone who can stretch the floor all the way to the arc.”
Brittney Sykes and Monique Billings
Next up we spoke with the Brittney Sykes and Monique Billings. Sykes is coming off a season in which she battled injury but she says that she feeling good and is excited about the upcoming season.
Monique Billings is looking to build off a solid rookie season. She said camp thus far has been competitive and the energy has been great.
Renee Montgomery and Alex Bentley
Last and definitely not least is the duo of Renee Montgomery and Alex Bentley. Montgomery is entering her 11th year in the WNBA and her 2nd season with the Dream. She brings a Championship pedigree, sharp shooting and valuable veteran leadership from the point guard position. When you talk about this teams energy you can usually find her at the center of it all. As you will see in the clip, Montgomery is full of energy and she has her focus on bringing a championship to Atlanta.
Alex Bentley came over in a trade last season and to some the dream wouldn’t have made the run that they did if Bentley was not on this team. She is a assassin on the court and she plays with an intensity that is unmatched on this Atlanta team. Speaking with a media member at today’s event and he simply said “Every team needs a Bentley on it’s squad.” No truer words have been spoken and you see the fire in her eye even when she speaks about the game.
